HOMECARE SAFETY CHECKLIST
Simple Steps for a Safer, More Comfortable Home
A safe home environment can help prevent accidents, reduce the risk of injury, and support independence for older adults, patients recovering from illness or surgery, and people receiving care at home.
Use this simple checklist to help make your home safer.
1. Preventing Falls
Falls are one of the most common accidents at home. A few simple precautions can make a significant difference.
- Keep floors, walkways and stairways free from clutter.
- Remove loose rugs or secure them with non-slip backing.
- Ensure rooms, corridors and stairways are adequately lit.
- Install handrails on stairs where needed.
- Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
- Encourage the use of prescribed walking aids such as walkers or canes.
- Keep floors dry and clean up spills immediately.
- Use non-slip footwear inside the home.
- Avoid rushing, especially when getting out of bed or a chair.
Caregiver Tip:
Assist the person when walking if they have weakness, poor balance, dizziness or a history of falls.
2. Bathroom Safety
Bathrooms can be particularly hazardous because of wet and slippery surfaces.
- Use non-slip mats inside and outside the bathroom.
- Install grab bars near the toilet and shower/bath area where appropriate
- Consider a shower chair for people who have difficulty standing for long periods.
- Keep soap, towels and toiletries within easy reach.
- Keep the bathroom floor dry.
- Ensure adequate lighting, especially during nighttime.
- Consider a raised toilet seat if recommended.
- Avoid using unstable stools or chairs as support.
Caregiver Tip:
Do not leave a person who requires assistance unattended in the bathroom.
3. Safe Medication Storage
Correct medication storage and organization can help prevent accidental use, missed doses and medication errors.
- Keep medicines in their original, clearly labelled containers.
- Store medicines according to the instructions on the label.
- Keep medications away from children and visitors.
- Do not share prescription medicines with others.
- Check expiry dates regularly.
- Keep a current list of all medicines being taken.
- Use a pill organizer only when appropriate and when medication instructions are clear.
- Avoid keeping medicines in places exposed to excessive heat or moisture unless specifically instructed.
- Dispose of expired or unused medicines safely according to local guidance.
Important:
Never change, stop or add medication without advice from the patient’s doctor or qualified healthcare professional.
4. Emergency Contacts
Keep important contact information easily accessible.
Keep a list of:
- Local emergency services
- Primary physician / family doctor
- Homecare nurse or care coordinator
- Family members or emergency contact persons
- Nearest hospital
- Pharmacy
- Relevant specialist or healthcare provider
Keep the emergency contact list:
- Near the telephone
- On the refrigerator or another easily visible location
- Saved in the caregiver’s and family members’ phones
5. Safe Movement Around the Home
Safe movement is important for maintaining independence while reducing injury risk.
- Keep pathways between the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living areas clear.
- Arrange furniture to allow comfortable movement.
- Avoid electrical cords across walking areas.
- Keep frequently used items at a comfortable height.
- Encourage slow and steady movement when standing up.
- Allow time to adjust after getting out of bed or a chair.
Remember:
Safety is more important than speed. Encourage the person to move slowly and ask for assistance when needed.
